About Coach Ben

Coaching Background

I am currently a USA Triathlon Level 1, USA Swimming Level 1, USA Cycling Level 3, and an American Swim Coaches Association Level 2 certified coach.

As a triathlon, running, and cycling coach, I have written training plans and guided athletes ranging from beginners to age group national championship qualifiers. My athletes have scored age group and overall wins, and have set course records and personal bests along the way. My goals as a coach are to give my athletes not just a high level of fitness, but also the sport specific skills and tactical knowledge necessary to succeed. I have helped athletes successfully complete triathlons ranging from sprint all the way up to the half ironman distance (and am always looking for my first Ironman competitor), and have helped runners in distances from 5K all the way up to the marathon.

In the water, I have guided swimmers of all ability levels. I have coached age group developmental swimmers as well as elite collegiate athletes. I am currently the head swimming coach at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA. At R-MC, I have guided swimmers to school and pool records, as well as conference championships. As a team, R-MC was 8-3 in 07-08 and finished 2nd out of 11 teams at the 2008 ODAC Championships.

Prior to joining the staff at Randolph-Macon, I served as the assistant swimming and diving coach at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. I helped Trinity swimmers achieve personal bests, pool records, and team records during the course of the season. I also guided several USA Sectionals qualifiers at Trinity.

I have also served as the co-head coach of the Kemp Mill Swim Club in the highly competitive Montgomery County Swim League in the Washington, DC metro area - most recently guiding the team to a Divisional Meet Championship and four new team records.

I also have extensive experience helping swimmers refine their technique and perfect their strokes. I have worked as a coach at the Total Performance Swim Camp, as well as the Hamilton College Competitive Swim Camp, a technique based camp for competitive swimmers. In addition, I frequently give private stroke and skills lessons.

Athletic Background

I have competed in triathlon for several years now. With eight wins and numerous podium finishes, my individual strengths are the swim and run, where I frequently post top splits. I am a 4-time USAT Nationals qualifier, and have been named a USAT All-American Honorable Mention on several occasions.

Prior to triathlon, I spent much of my time as an athlete swimming and running. With over 18 years of competitive swimming experience, I have a wealth of aquatic knowledge to pass down to you. In the pool, I have won awards and set age group and state records, while competing at the state, regional, and national levels. Outside the pool, I have competed in several open water swims, including the Ironman World Championships swim course in Kona.

My running career began nearly 15 years ago, and I have competitive experience in track, cross country, and road racing. I have scored numerous victories in my career and even have a course record to my credit. My vast training and racing experiences have given me the knowledge to better serve the athletes I guide.
